Gary James Bathrooms is a small, experienced team that designs and builds bathrooms across Guildford and the wider Surrey area. We are based at Woodbridge Meadows in the heart of town (GU1 1BA), so when you book us you are dealing with a genuinely local firm, not a national franchise or a showroom that hands your job to whoever is free that week. Gary has spent over 20 years planning and installing bathrooms, and he is on the tools alongside the rest of the team for every project.
What sets us apart is simple. Every job is handled start to finish by our own full-time, in-house team. You will see the same uniformed faces in their company vans from the first day of strip-out to the last wipe-down of the new tiles, and we bring in trusted specialists only where it genuinely helps the finish. That means no chains of subcontractors, no finger-pointing if something needs sorting, and one team who takes responsibility for the whole bathroom.
Whether you live in a Victorian terrace in Charlotteville, a 1930s semi in Stoughton, a family home in Merrow or Burpham, or a period cottage out towards the villages, we build bathrooms that suit the house and the way you actually live. As we like to put it, it's just a bathroom, until it's by Gary James.

We cover the whole of Guildford and the postcodes around it. In GU1 we work right across the town centre, Merrow, Burpham and Bellfields. In GU2 we look after Onslow Village, Park Barn, Guildford Park and the streets up towards the University and the Royal Surrey. GU3 takes us out to Worplesdon, Fairlands and Wood Street Village, while GU4 covers Shalford, Chilworth, Burpham's eastern edge and Jacobs Well. We are well used to the mix of homes here, from compact town-centre flats and Edwardian villas around Pewley to roomy detached houses on the leafier estates.
We also travel out to the surrounding villages, including the GU5 postcodes around Bramley, Wonersh, Shamley Green and Shere, along with Albury, Chilworth and the lanes of the Surrey Hills. If you are near Shalford, Compton, Normandy or anywhere in between and you are not sure whether we reach you, just ask. We serve Surrey and Hampshire, so there is a good chance Guildford and your village are well within our patch.
Around Guildford, homeowners know us as more than just plumbers. Gary James is a full bathroom company whose own team are experienced bathroom fitters, bathroom installers and bathroom planners. Whether you want a fresh bathroom design, a brand new bathroom for a growing family, or a neat ensuite bathroom installation, we plan and build the whole thing ourselves.
A complete renovation with us means exactly that. We take the room back to the brick and rebuild it properly. That starts with a full strip-out and waste removal, and we lift the old floorboards so we have full access to the pipes, wastes and electrics underneath. Skipping that step is how a lot of bathrooms end up with hidden problems, so we never cut the corner.
Once everything is exposed and put right, we fit new tongue-and-groove pine floorboards topped with tile backer board, ready for a solid, level finish. From there we work through plumbing, electrics, waterproofing, tiling and fitting in a clear order, so your Guildford bathroom is built on sound foundations rather than dressed up over old ones. If you would like to see how a typical project comes together, ask us about our bathroom renovation packages.
Every bathroom we build is designed around your room and your routine, not pulled off a shelf. We plan the layout, the fittings and the look with you, taking into account the quirks of your home, whether that is a sloped ceiling in a Guildford loft conversion, a narrow ensuite, or a generous family bathroom that needs to handle a busy morning.
Because Gary plans and installs bathrooms himself, the design you agree on is the design that actually gets built. There is no gap between a salesperson's sketch and what the fitters can deliver, because the people designing it are the people doing the work.
After the strip-out, we get the first fix right before anything is hidden away. Our plumbing uses concealed pipework with WRAS-approved fittings and McAlpine waste fittings, so everything sits neatly out of sight and meets the proper standards. Getting this stage spot on is what stops leaks and rattles down the line.
First fix electrics are planned and compliant from the start, covering electric towel rails, lighting and anything else your new layout calls for. Because plumbing, electrics and the build are all handled by the one Gary James team, the trades work to a single plan rather than tripping over each other.
A bathroom lives or dies on how well it is waterproofed, so we use 100% waterproof tile backer boards on both the floor and the walls rather than plasterboard. The shower tray or bath is built in, and every wet zone is fully tanked and made watertight before a single tile goes up. It is the part you never see, and it is the part that keeps your bathroom sound for years.
For the tiling itself we import tiles directly from trusted manufacturers in Spain, typically 600x600mm rectified porcelain, fixed with S1 flexible adhesive and finished with a hybrid resin and cement grout. The result is large-format tiling with narrow, sharp grout lines and a clean, modern finish that suits homes right across Guildford and the Surrey Hills villages.
The fittings are where a bathroom starts to feel like yours. We fit Grohe close-coupled toilets, Grohe bar mixers and bath and shower mixers, and tailored vanity basin units finished with Grohe taps. Chrome electric towel rails keep things warm and dry, and we plan the lighting so the room feels right morning and evening.
These are quality fittings chosen to last and to look the part, and because everything is fitted by our own team to the design we agreed, the finishing touches line up the way they should. If you would like a feel for the standard, take a look at some of our recent bathroom projects.
We handle the full range, from compact ensuites tucked into a Guildford bedroom to large family bathrooms that take real daily wear. Walk-in showers and freestanding baths are popular choices, and we can build in underfloor heating so the room is warm underfoot on a cold Surrey morning.
Whether you want a calm ensuite for a master bedroom in Onslow Village, a hard-working family bathroom in Merrow, or a statement bathroom with a freestanding bath in a period home out towards Shere, we design and build it around how the space is actually used.
We are not the cheapest and we do not pretend to be. What we offer is one experienced team doing the whole job properly, with the kind of attention to the hidden details that decides whether a bathroom lasts. Here is what you can expect when you choose us.

If you are thinking about a new bathroom anywhere in Guildford or the surrounding Surrey villages, we would love to hear what you have in mind. Give Gary a call on 01428 772212 or 01483 323989, or email gary@garyjamesbathrooms.co.uk, and we will arrange a time to visit, look at your room and talk through the options. There is no pressure and no hard sell, just honest advice from a local team that builds bathrooms properly.
Almost certainly. As well as Guildford itself (GU1 to GU4) we regularly work in the surrounding villages, including Shalford, Chilworth, Worplesdon, Bramley, Wonersh, Shamley Green, Albury and Shere out towards the GU5 postcodes. We serve Surrey and Hampshire, so if you are nearby just call and we will confirm we reach you.
A complete renovation usually runs over a couple of weeks, though it depends on the size of the room and the spec. Because we strip back to the brick, lift floorboards and tank every wet zone before tiling, we do not rush the hidden stages. We will give you a realistic timeline when we quote so you know what to expect.

Everything from strip-out and waste removal to the final fittings. That includes new tongue-and-groove floorboards with tile backer board, first fix plumbing with WRAS-approved and McAlpine fittings, planned and compliant electrics, full tanking of wet zones, Spanish porcelain tiling, and Grohe toilets, taps and mixers with a tailored vanity unit and chrome towel rail.
We handle all of it. Our own in-house team takes care of the plumbing, electrics, waterproofing, tiling and fitting, with trusted specialists brought in only where it genuinely improves the finish. You deal with one team from start to finish, not several different contractors.
